These are related to the infamous Blowflies. Although Blue Bottle flies are seldom a large problem in homes, they can be quite annoying because of their persistent buzzing. They are very active and are usually seen buzzing around windows. These flies are frequently found in the decaying bodies of rodents and other animals that have been killed or have died inside the attics, wall voids or chimneys of homes. The adult is about 1/2" or slightly larger and are metallic blue in color. Life Cycle:
Females may lay up to 600 eggs in their lifetime. They prefer to lay their eggs in meat, fish or carrion but are also attracted to animal manure, garbage and rotting vegetable matter. If enough moisture is present, eggs can hatch immediately. Larvae may only crawl a few feet to find a drier place to pupate. The adults emerge in 2-3 weeks. They have the ability to overwinter in the larval, nymph, and adult stages.
